  • Kunjargad is a remote fort located in Ahmednagar district, Maharashtra, India. It is located in the Harishchandragad range. The fort top is 1400 meter above msl. The fort is named as Kunjargad due to its shape is like a large elephant. In Sanskrit, Kunjar means elephant. The fort is also locally called as Kombad killa.The fort is accessible from north from Vihir village. Vihir village is located in Mula river basin. It is located on the Bota-Kotul-Lavali road, which runs along the north base of harishchandragad range. Vihir village is 875 meter above msl. The base of the fort (900 m above msl) is about a km south of the village. So the climb from Vihir to Kunjargad fort top is about 525 meter. The climb is steep and takes about 2.5 Hrs, for average climber. The fort is also accessible from another village, Phopsandi located in the hills south of the fort, in Mandvi river basin. Phopsondi is connected toKotul via a road which passes through Balaai hill pass. Phopsondi village is 1035 meter above msl. So the climb from Phopsondi to Kunjargad fort top is about 365 meter. The Kotul Phopsondi road passes through a hill pass of Balaaidongar. The road in this pass is located at about 1260 meter above msl. From this pass the fort climb is hardly 140 meter, however it is about 2.5 km far.
